A fixed push/fold chart gets you most of the way, but it assumes every opponent plays a standard range. In practice, players differ wildly — some fold too much, some call too wide — and adjusting for that is where real edge comes from.

Against a player who only calls with premium hands, you can profitably push a much wider range than a standard chart suggests.
ICM in tournament formats
Near the money or a pay jump, survival has real value — a mathematically close push/fold decision often becomes a clear fold once ICM is factored in.
Blending chart theory with live reads
The strongest All-in or Fold players don’t throw out the push/fold chart — they use it as a baseline and adjust from there based on what they’ve actually observed at the table. A chart tells you the mathematically neutral play against an unknown opponent; everything you learn about a specific player’s tendencies should pull you away from that baseline in a specific direction.
ICM pressure points to watch for
The moments ICM matters most are pay jumps and the bubble — anywhere survival has outsized value compared to your raw chip count. Outside those windows, closer to chip-EV decisions is usually fine; inside them, err toward the tighter side of your range.
