Building a PLO hand

Every player gets four hole cards instead of Hold’em’s two. To make your final hand, you must use exactly two of your own cards together with exactly three of the five community cards — no more, no less. That single rule is what separates PLO from every other flop game.

How pot-limit betting works

The cap

The maximum bet or raise is capped at the current size of the pot, rather than going all the way to all-in on a whim like no-limit.

PLO-5

Same structure, five hole cards instead of four — more combinations, more action.

Common mistakes new PLO players make

The most frequent error is overvaluing two-pair and single-pair hands the way you would in Hold’em — in PLO, with four hole cards to draw from, opponents hit straights and flushes far more often, so hands that would be strong in Hold’em often aren’t worth the same aggression here.

Practicing the “exactly two” rule

New players sometimes instinctively try to use three or four of their hole cards, which isn’t legal — it’s worth deliberately slowing down on early hands to confirm you’re combining exactly two hole cards with exactly three community cards until the habit becomes automatic.

The “exactly two” rule in practice

Your 4 hole cards Board Valid best hand?
Two pairs of aces Three more aces on board No — only two of your cards count, not all four
Two suited cards + two off-suit Three more of that suit on board Yes — the two suited hole cards complete the flush

This is genuinely the single most common mistake newer PLO players make — seeing four aces “on the board plus in hand” and assuming quads, when the rule only ever lets you use exactly two of your own cards. Get that rule locked in before anything else; the rest of PLO strategy builds on top of it.

Common questions

Can I use three or all four of my hole cards?

No — the rule is exactly two, never more or fewer, combined with exactly three community cards.

How is a pot-limit raise calculated?

The maximum raise equals the current pot size, including the amount needed to call before the raise.
